TEAKNET celebrates Silver Jubilee in 2020!!
Coinciding with organisation of World Teak Conference in Ghana, TEAKNET is celebrating its Silver Jubilee year in 2020. Considering the prominent position of teak in the global timber market and its natural home range limited to the Asia Pacific region, FAO of the United Nations Regional Office for Asia Pacific conceived the idea of establishing a network exclusively for the single species of teak. Thus, TEAKNET took its birth in 1995 in Myanmar. Currently, Kerala Forest Research Institute, Peechi, in India hosts its Secretariat since 2008.
Ever since its establishment, TEAKNET has now grown from its suboptimal state to a world- wide hub for information network that caters to the needs of the researchers, cultivators, loggers, traders, farmers, scientists and policy makers alike. Over the years, TEAKNET organised many international seminars/conference/workshops and training programmes on teak cultivation and management and its sustainable use in different parts of the world. TEAKNET was a partner of the Global Teak Study report published by the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) in 2017. At present, TEAKNET is a project Partner for information management in the ITTO executed teak project for Mekong countries for three years starting March 2019 covering five countries, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Lao PDR and Cambodia. TEAKNET continues its journey supporting the teak fraternity on a global scale and on the occasion of WTC in Ghana, we are planning special lecture/invited talk on TEAKNET, the details will be announced in the conference web page (www.worldteakconference2020.com) in the coming months.
