Inception Workshop and Launching Ceremony of ITTO Teak project: "Enhancing the Conservation and Sustainable Management of Teak Forests and Legal and Sustainable Wood Supply Chains in the Greater Mekong Sub-region" (PP-A/54-331), 23-25 April 2019, Bangkok

Considering the prominent position of Teak in the global timber market and its potential to contribute to national economic growth and local livelihoods, the International Topical Timber Organisation (ITTO), Japan is executing Teak project approved by its International Tropical Timber Council (ITTC) meeting in Peru (2017), an activity entitled “Enhancing Teak Management” under ITTO Biennial Work Program for 2018-19 as a comprehensive global support program to improve the management and marketing of both natural and plant teak in all three topical regions. The project is financed by The Federal Republic of Germany through the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL). The first stage of activity in the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) covering 5 countries, viz., Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam commenced its activity since March 2019.

ITTO launches project on sustainable teak management in Greater Mekong Sub region. Teaknet-India is also involved in this project and being a part, Teaknet enjoys the role of information management and networking, and support the dissemination of the outreach material and short project newsletters every two months and publish it online.

The ITTO project “Enhancing the conservation and sustainable management of teak forests and legal and sustainable wood supply chains in the Greater Mekong Sub-region”, is funded by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Government of Germany. The aim of the project is to assist the five participating countries—Cambodia, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam—to conserve unique natural teak forests and their gene pools; increase incomes for forest communities and smallholders; improve wood processing and marketing; and enhance regional collaboration and cooperation in teak management.
